Graphic Novel of the Month
American Born Chinese
by Gene Yang
This graphic novel takes us through three separate emotionally-charged stories all loosely revolving around the same universal feeling of not fitting in. Introduced to us are Monkey King, who wants to leave his roots behind and be worshipped as a god; Jin Wang, a shy Asian-American trying to be accepted in his predominantly white school; and Danny, who is embarrassed by his racially stereotypical Chinese cousin. These three separate stories come together in an unexpected twist. The message is conveyed through crisp, simple drawings and easy language; through acceptance of who you really are, you can begin to find peace.
